Anthony G. Bottini, MD, spent more than three decades as a neurosurgeon. His career began, and was shaped, at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. He did his surgical internship there and later returned as Chief of Neurosurgery from 1990 to 1996. In that job he cared for soldiers, their families, veterans and people across the Pacific basin. He went on to serve at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington, then built and led neurosurgery practices across Minnesota. Along the way he served as president of the Minnesota Neurosurgical Society and taught residents as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota.
He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and trained in neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota. He retired from clinical practice in 2024, and he writes both fiction and nonfiction. He draws on his years as an Army physician, his knowledge of the people and places of Hawaii, and his respect for the men and women who served there. His books include the Brothers Through the Storm series (An Ocean Away, The Far Island and From Heaven to Hell), as well as Dear Nearly Departed, The Unquiet Wife, Life as a Fish and his earlier book, Friday Night Heroes. He lives in Minneapolis.
